2008 NFL Mock Draft
TeamPos PlayerComments:
1OT, Jake Long, MichiganThe Dolphins signed Long to a five year 57.5 Million dollar contract. They can now focus on cornerback, linebacker, tight end and receiver in the following rounds.
2DT, Glenn Dorsey, LSUI personally think Sedrick Ellis will be better than Dorsey; but I doubt the Rams agree. With the addition of Dorsey they can now move last years #1 pick Adam Carriker back outside which is his natural position.
3QB, Matt Ryan, Boston CollegeA franchise quarterback to replace Michael Vick. Ryan has an NFL arm, size and leadership ability. Now that they signed Michael Turner they won't grab McFadden.
4DE/OLB, Chris Long, Virginia
I don't see what all the debate is with this pick, the best player available who also fills a need. Long ranked 3rd in the nation with 14 sacks and 19 tackles for loss in 2007.
5DT, Sedrick Ellis, USCWith two picks in the first round the Chiefs can now take the best available player, who happens to fill a huge needs. Ellis will make Tambi Hali better and they can address defensive end and corner in the later rounds.
6RB, Darren McFadden, ArkansasMcFadden is still considered the best player in this draft, but character concerns are causing him to slip. He ran a fantastic 4.27 forty at the combine. The Cowboys might try to trade up about here if McFadden starts falling.
7DE, Vernon Gholston, Ohio StateFrom San Fran: The Patriots' linebackers are getting old. Gholston finished the 2007 season ranking 4th in the nation with 13 sacks and was a combine star in all areas running a 4.67 forty. An ideal 34 linebacker.
8QB, Brian Brohm, Louisville Look for the Ravens to take a cornerback here and then try and trade back into the bottom of the first round and get Brohm. Either way, with Steve McNair retired and Matt Ryan likely already gone, they can't pass on Brohm.
9OLB, Keith Rivers, USCThey need a defensive tackle, but there isn't one worthy of this spot. Rivers is a very athletic, experienced linebacker with excellent size (6' 3" 240 lbs). A future Pro Bowler.
10CB, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Tennessee StateThis talented Division 1AA prospect, showed he could compete with the big boys at the Senior Bowl and he blazed a 4.33 forty at the NFL Scouting combine.
11WR, Devin Thomas, Michigan StateThe Bills want to trade down here because there isn't a receiver worthy of this spot, but if they can't, Thomas is their man. A talented, big play, junior receiver with terrific speed. He ran a 4.40 forty at the combine.
12OT, Ryan Clady, Boise State Clady is the perfect choice for the Broncos. He is 6' 6" 310 pounds and can start as a rookie. The retirement of Matt Lepsis has made them thin at offensive tackle.
13RB, Rashard Mendenhall, IllinoisI really like DeAngelo Williams' potential for the future, but he is a little small and needs a big running back to share the load with. Mendenhall (5' 10" 225 lbs) ran a very good 4.45 forty at the combine.
14OL, Branden Albert, VirginiaThey might trade up in the early part of round two and take QB Joe Flacco or Chad Henne. Albert (6' 6" 317 lbs) is only a junior, but has already started 3 years, he can play both tackle and guard.
15ILB Jerod Mayo, TennesseeThe Lions need some playmakers on their defense and Mayo gives them a young, fast, (4.54), inside linebacker with nice size (6' 2" 242 lbs) and athleticism.

16CB, Leodis McKelvin, TroyThe Cards might move under performing Antrell Rolle to safety and Eric Green has struggled at times. McKelvin is a special talent; he ran a 4.38 forty at the combine and can also return punts and kickoffs.
17OT, Chris Williams, VanderbiltFrom Vikings:  Basically with these picks the Chiefs traded Jared Allen for Williams and Ellis. I think the Chiefs ended up in great shape. Williams has great size (6' 6" 320 lbs) and athleticism and could start as a rookie.
18RB, Jonathan Stewart, OregonStewart had toe surgery on March 10th, but I don't think it will hurt his draft stock because he ran a 4.48 at the 2008 NFL Scouting Combine. The Texans get a speed back (4.49) with power and size (5' 11" 235 lbs).
19DE Phillip Merling, ClemsonSince the release of Jevon Kearse the Eagles are thin on talent at defensive end after Trent Cole. Merling is explosive coming off the edge and at 6' 5" 272 pounds, he fits the Eagles system.
20WR, Limas Sweed, TexasSweed suffered a season ending wrist injury early in the 2007 season and reinjured it at the Senior Bowl, but ran a good 4.47 forty at the NFL Scouting Combine.
21DT, Kentwan Balmer, UNCBalmer is an underrated, athletic talent with nice size (6' 4" 307 lbs). He was coached by the great D-line coach  John Blake. The aging Cornelius Griffin played only average in 2007.
22CB, Mike Jenkins, South FloridaFrom Cleveland: The Cowboys traded a 4th round pick for CB Pac man Jones, but wouldn't hesitate to draft Jenkins if fell down to them here. The speedy corner ran a nice 4.38 forty at the combine.
23OT Jeff Otah, Pittsburgh The Steelers have a solid team, but need depth on the offensive line and Otah might be better suited to play on the inside. Tackle Max Starks was signed for only one more year.
24WR James Hardy, IndianaThe Titans get a big (6' 5.5" 216 lbs), fast (4.47), talented young receiver that will be a major weapon in the red zone. A much needed weapon for Vince Young.
25WR Malcolm Kelly, OklahomaKelly is a great fit here, he skipped the combine with a quad injury and at Oklahoma's Pro Day workout ran a poor 4.68 forty. His stock is slipping, but is still an awesome talent.
26DE, Derrick Harvey, FloridaEven though his 4.80 forty time was nothing special, he looked fantastic during the agility drills. At 6' 4.5" and 271 pounds, Harvey is the complete package.
27OT, Gosder Cherilus, Boston College
Shane Olivea and Jeromey Clary didn't get the job done in 2007 at right tackle. Cherilus would be a perfect fit to take over that spot as he has considerable experience playing right tackle.
28WR, DeSean Jackson, CaliforniaJackson is small at 5' 9" 167 pounds, but has blazing speed, running a 4.35 at the combine. If they can't re-sign Marion Barber before the draft, running back might be the #1 priority.
29DE Quentin Groves, AuburnFrom Indianapolis: This might be a little high for Groves, but pass rushing outside linebackers/defensive ends that are 6' 3" 255 lbs with 4.51 speed are in very high demand for teams that play the 34 defense.
30TE, Dustin Keller, PurdueWith the release of Bubba Franks, the tight end position becomes a real need, yes they have Donald Lee, but no depth thereafter. Keller is the best pass catching tight end in the nation with blazing speed (4.53).
31ForfeitedPer NFL penalty, the Pats will lose this year's first-round draft. The Patriots got caught videotaping signals from the New York Jets' sideline during New England's 38-14 win September 9th at Giants Stadium.
32S, Tyrell Johnson, Arkansas StateJohnson is a little raw, but the Giants desperately need safety help and Johnson is a fantastic athlete with blazing speed (4.46), athleticism, great ball skills and size (6' 205 lbs). He can even play cornerback in a pinch.

Cleveland Browns57DT, Trevor Laws, Notre Dame At the 2008 NFL Scouting Combine Laws ran a 5.08 forty. He was unstoppable at the Senior Bowl and during the 2007 season recorded 112 tackles, 8 TFLs and 4 sacks, those stats are unheard of for an interior lineman.
Colts59Chris Ellis, Virginia TechThe Colts need depth along the defensive line. Ellis is 6' 4" 263 pounds, recorded 8.5 sacks in 2007 and ran a 4.71 at the NFL Scouting combine.
