Miami Draft Review

After last week’s draft I only have one question for Bill Parcells and Jeff Ireland. Was there any thought to drafting a defensive back? Not to say I’m not happy with the picks of Jake Long or Chad Henne. I just think perhaps addressing the secondary, which was just terrible last season, would be a wise decision. As it stands right now, Miami still doesn’t have an elite cornerback or safety.

Time will tell if passing on what one of the deepest cornerbacks draft, was a good move. With the selection of Jake Long, Miami tipped their hand to everyone on how they would rebuild their inside game on both sides of the ball. Six of their nine picks were from either the offensive or defensive line. It was nothing new when dealing with a Bill Parcells team. The blueprint for this team is right in front of everyone. He wanted to build it tough upfront on both sides of the ball and so he did. With Jake Long at left tackle for hopefully for many years to come he made the right choice. Left tackles are hard to find these days. Good ones are even harder to find. With this pick I think Miami addressed that need and got a top notch player as well.

One move that I definitely think will help Miami in the future is Chad Henne. The quarterback from Michigan was selected with one of their two 2nd round picks. Henne was a four years starter at Michigan and has played in many big games. Being reunited with Jake Long also doesn’t hurt. Henne is know for a strong arm and also is considered a coach and general on the field at the same time. I look forward to seeing what he can do.

One pick that surprised me was Phillip Merling. It didn’t surprise me that Merling was drafted by Miami; it surprised me that he was still there in the 2nd round. It was widely speculated that Merling was headed for the 1st round. Merling fell out of the 1st round because of a hernia operation. Some teams might have been scared off by that but not Miami. I think he could be a huge steal for Miami and I am curious to see how he will fit into there 3-4 system that most likely will be played. Is he an end or perhaps will he be moved to outside linebacker.

In two weeks I will write another column including some of the others player drafted. For now in my honest opinion this draft was good. Not great just good in my eyes. No new secondary players added through the draft. Not even a wide receiver either. Those are two positions I thought for sure would be addressed but I guess I was dead wrong. I can only assume they have a good plan ahead for the Dolphins. I just hope it includes Chad Henne starting in the near

And With The Number One Pick In The 2008 NFL Draft The Miami Dolphins Select …

Jake Long, offensive tackle from Michigan. After months of debating I have come to the conclusion that Jake Long should be taken with the number one pick in this year’s draft. In the end I do believe I made a pick that makes the most sense. With Jake Long onboard now, you could focus your entire draft now on helping the secondary or looking for a franchise quarterback.

Nothing against Chris Long or Matt Ryan, but I really never had any interest in either one. I’m sure they are going to make great pro players someday but the need for an offensive tackle is too great. The only player I had a slight interest over Jake Long was Vernon Gholston. The defensive end from Ohio St. intrigues me. Some scouts have compared him to a young Shawn Merriman and Gholston does have all the tools to become a great player. He fits so well into a 3-4 defensive scheme and is suited for an outside linebacker role.

Jake Long and Vernon Gholston are definitely linked together. Most likely they will be the 1st two players taken in this year’s draft. Let’s also consider that Long gave up only two sacks in his college career. One of those two sacks was by Gholston. They also played in one of the best college football rivalries (Ohio St versus Michigan). Jake Long and his Michigan teammates started the year with national title hopes while Gholston and the Buckeyes ended up playing in the national title game. The similarities are remarkable.

This year’s draft brings some hope with it. Having the number one pick doesn’t hurt but this is Bill Parcells and Jeff Ireland 1st draft with the Dolphins. A lot of people are curious what those two might do draft day. Will they trade the pick? Could they surprise Dolphin fans and pick someone like Matt Ryan or Glenn Dorsey? Who really knows what they are thinking. Most people are expecting the tuna and Ireland to go with more defensive players for most of the draft. The unit is getting old and there still has to be the possibility of trading Jason Taylor.

A month ago Coach Tony Sparano and General Manager Jeff Ireland both were quoted saying that they want Taylor on this team. Are they being genuine or is that more of a smokescreen. I personally think this is the perfect opportunity to trade him and get something for him. Their have been rumors involving both the Vikings and Packers. So far Miami has denied all rumors about Taylor. If you can get two picks for him I think you have to listen. The more picks the better. This team is in a rebuilding mode. With or without Jason Taylor, it’s safe to say Miami isn’t going to be a playoff team in ’08. So what not trade him and get some extra picks. That would make the most sense.

With all those factors out in the open it is time to turn your attention to the mock draft I did. It wasn’t easy and it toke a lot of thinking on my part. What position does Miami really need or does this type of player fit what Miami could be looking for. All those questions I answered to the best of my ability. I would also like to offer some friendly advice to Jeff Ireland. When standing at the podium in Miami headquarters on draft day, please don’t mention that we selected a great player and then go on to say that we are really going to love his family too. Last thing we need to be reminded of is that speech given by that clown Cam Cameron last draft day. Please no more speeches keep it fun and light Mr. Ireland.

1-Jake Long-OT-Michigan-When you look at this pick you know it feels right. Long stands at 6’ 7" and weighs in at 313 pounds. That’s a lot of meat. He has the great size you look for in a left tackle. He is very a powerful and tough player too.

2-Joe Flacco-QB-Delaware-Flacco has an outstanding arm. His arm strength has improved over the last few seasons. He has thrown 43 touchdown passes over the last two seasons. He has been described as a great leader and a hard worker to. He might need a year or two to develop but I do think he is worth the pick.

2-Patrick Lee-CB-Auburn-Lee moves very quickly to the ball and picked off four passes last season. He has improved on his man to man coverage and has become much more physical. I think he could come in and start right away opposite Will Allen. (Pick acquired from San Diego)

3-Beau Bell-LB-UNLV-Some people might think it is to way to early to grab Bell here I am not one of them. This guy is going to be a great player. I think passing up on him would be a mistake no matter the round. Listen to his stats: 111 tackles, three sacks and four interceptions. Those are playmaker stats. Bell can play either inside or outside linebacker position. It has been awhile since Miami had a play making linebacker. Bell has the makings of a good one.

4-Chad Rinehart-G-Northern Iowa-Rinehart is 6’ 5" and weights in at 316. He is very physical and has a lot of potential. Coach Sparano loves guys like this, big and physical. Miami needs another guard. Rinehart could be what their looking for.

6-Adrian Arrington-WR-Michigan-Miami could use another wide out. I like the potential of Arrington. In the bowl game versus Florida, Arrington had nine catches for 153 yards with two scores. He also made some great catches that game. Some have said he is too inconsistent but I love what he brings to the table. He has a great leaping ability and at 6’2, would make a nice red zone threat. With the poor play of Hagans and really no number three wide receiver on the current roster, Arrington could be what Miami needs.

6-Chester Adams-G-Georgia-You can never have enough offensive lineman. He is listed at 6’ 4" and 331 pounds. Adams is very big and very physical. Good traits to have for a future pro lineman. He played some tackle at UGA which could always come in handy trying to make a pro roster. I like Adams with this pick and could be a nice surprise.

(This pick was awarded as compensation)

7-DJ Wolfe-S-Oklahoma-Wolfe had a good season in ’07. He finished with 87 tackles and four interceptions. He has decent speed and has a good nose for the ball. Miami needs a young safety on there roster. Last year’s secondary was the pits. Wolfe could be a nice find this late in the draft.

7-Frank Morton-DT-Tulane-If Miami is looking for a potential nose tackle, look no further. Morton is considered a run stuffing machine. He is 6’2 and weighs 307 pounds. He most likely would play the nose tackle position in the pros and with Miami playing the 3-4 he would be an ideal fit for them. (This pick was awarded as compensation)

I am happy with all my picks. I have addresses the offensive line in a big way. One left tackle in Jake Long who will be a starter right away along with Rinehart and Adams, guards who could add depth to a position that needs it.

A terrible secondary has been beefed up with both a safety and cornerback. Lee would be a nice player for this team. Wolfe in the 7th round could be a steal. The defensive line was not addressed as much as it should have been, but Morton could definitely make up for it in a big way.

With Miami currently having only two good receivers on the roster, a receiver was needed in the draft. If Arrington lives up to his potential he could be an ideal number three receiver for them. The player I really like out of the whole mock draft is Beau Bell. Some see him as a 4th rounder, I don’t agree with any of those who say that. This guy is a playmaker and could be a major force in their linebacker corps for years to come. If Miami finishes up with a draft like this I would be ecstatic. I try and look at thing as realistic as you can and so I have done the best I could do. Now it is time for tuna and company to do their best.

Is Matt Ryan Worth the Gamble?

Having taken John Beck is last years draft: you would think taking Matt Ryan as the number one pick overall a foolish move. Think again. Beck was drafted by Randy Mueller and Cam Cameron, both of them are long gone. Beck will turn 27 years old when the season opens. At that age most quarterbacks in the league are entering there fourth year. Beck will be entering in only his 2nd year. You see where I’m going with this. How can a 27 year old quarterback be considered your quarterback of the future?

If you read between the lines, you can tell I’m not a fan of John Beck. I don’t think he is a very good quarterback and I seriously doubt he will ever be a franchise quarterback for this team or any other team in this league. I could go on and on about him, but I rather devote my time to another quarterback, Matt Ryan.

Sure, it would seem odd that Miami would select Ryan with the number one pick, but let’s think here for one second. Beck was the desired pick of Mueller and Cameron. They are not currently working for Miami. Do the Dolphins owe Beck the chance to be there starting quarterback in ’08…nope. With the new regime here, they may want a quarterback of there choice. Not some leftover from the days of Cameron. After all fair is fair. Beck never did show any promise when he was in there. Between fumbling almost every snap or just being very passive when he was out there, it is easy to see why Parcells and Ireland would be interested in someone like Matt Ryan.

That interest for Ryan could be a smokescreen as well, but I do believe their interest in him is genuine. With teams like Atlanta and Kansas City having there eyes on him, it makes you wonder how willing would they be to move up to that number one spot

Miami is a team that has a lot of holes and they need all the picks they can get. Is it worth trading that pick when you can have the number one ranked quarterback in this year’s draft? Ryan is described as an inconsistent player with many things he must improve on if he wants to become an elite NFL quarterback. There are others that would argue that Ryan has all the tools you look for in a future quarterback in the pros.

Parcells and Ireland have a tough decision to make. Do they go ahead and draft Matt Ryan with the number one pick or do they trade that pick for some extra picks down the line.

I think any way you look at it Miami comes out looking like a winner. If you do trade the pick you are probably getting multiple picks from a team. On the other hand if you do hold on to the pick and take Ryan, I think you solve your quarterback problems for years to come. Ryan may not come in with all the hype that surrounded players such as Vince Young and Eli Manning, but when it comes down to it he is the right pick.

I know there are a ton of Miami fans screaming for Chris long or Jake Long. Those two are great players, but this comes down to winning games. Yes, a great defense can win you a championship and sure it helps to have a great left tackle but it takes a great quarterback to get you to that big game. Looking back at this year’s Super Bowl there will be many fans that remember the great catch by David Tyree, but let’s not forget the man that threw the pass and had a superb playoff run. Eli Manning was that quarterback. The man leading you into battle will always dictate who wins or losses. The quarterback position is that position.

If you would ask me today what I think Miami would do with the overall pick, I couldn’t answer that. There are so many directions that they could go in to help this team. Trading the pick makes the most sense, but don’t be surprised to see tuna and company pick someone to lead this team into battle like Matt Ryan. This team has gone far too long without a leader at that position.

2008 NFL Draft Needs

In five weeks we will find out how good Bill Parcells is at evaluating talent. In five weeks we will find out what direction he intends to take this team. Make no mistake about it; this team needs a lot of help.

Where do you start from? Well, for starters how about a quarterback or perhaps some help in the secondary. There is also a need for a left tackle and it wouldn’t hurt to draft a middle linebacker. With that said, I don’t see how Miami can stay with that number one overall pick.

In my opinion Miami doesn’t have enough quality picks to get good players at key positions. As it stands now, this team only has seven draft picks. That may sound like a lot, but when you just finished the season 1-15, you need all the help you can get. By trading the pick you could gain extra picks. Something this team also needs is good young players that can come in and start right away. There hasn’t been too many of those lately.

I think when it comes down to it, Miami has to look at the bigger picture here. The more picks for them the better it is. Somehow this teams needs to find a way to accumulate anywhere from nine to ten picks for this draft. I would love to see what they could do with that many picks.

I will try my best to play Bill Parcells and Jeff Ireland as I attempt my 1st mock draft for you. So here it goes. Any comments you have is always appreciated.

1-Chris Long-DE-Virginia-Had 14 sacks this past season…Can play in either the 4-3 or 3-4…Has a great motor and is a playmaker…Son of former NFL great Howie Long.

2-Joe Flacco-QB-Delaware-Threw for over 4,000 yards and had 23 touchdown passes. At 6’6 he definitely has the size to play the position in the NFL. Another bonus would be his quick release. Flacco has a quick release and delivery.

2-Antoine Cason-DB-Arizona-Was a four year starter for the Wildcats…Finished with 5 picks this year and had 15 for his entire career. He is an aggressive player who can be that playmaker you need in the secondary.

3-Carl Nicks-T-Nebraska-Played at the left tackle only last yea While being listed at 6’4 and weighing in at 341 pounds, Nick is still a little raw but he has the physical tools to becoming a great player.

4-D.J. Hall-WR-Alabama-With not that many receivers on the team I think Hall would fit in nicely and could be used as the # 3 wide out on the team…Caught 67 balls for over 1,000 yards…Catches everything thrown his way and is a great leaper.

6-Kerry Brown-G-Appalachian St- A decent run blocker who could add depth to a position that is lacking…Comes in at 6’6 and 310 pounds.

7-Eric Wicks-S-West Virginia-Finished with 3 picks for the 2nd year in a row…decent speed and size…Has great balls skills…Could add depth to the position and play himself onto the special teams unit.

To sum things up, I hope you thought my 1st stab at a mock draft was insightful. The player on this list that I would love to see Miami get is Antoine Cason. As of right now, Cason is projected as a 2nd rounder. I think we could be a great fit with Miami. He has the size and speed to play the cornerback spot in the NFL. In the upcoming weeks I shall return with another mock draft. I think the next one I try might include some trade ideas with Atlanta or Dallas. That should make things so much more interesting to say the least

Time to Welcome the Newest Dolphins

Bill Parcells and Jeff Ireland didn’t waste any time signings players this past weekend. At the speed and rate they were doing it, you would have thought it was some type of race. Well at least this year Dolphin fans can’t complain that their team didn’t go out and sign a few players.

There were some curious signings, but for the most part I expected these 2nd tier players. I was surprised to see Miami not sign a player like Jacob Bell or Gibril Wilson but i am sure Parcells had his reasons. The signing of guard Justin Smiley was probably the highlight of the day.

Smiley is only 26 years old and moves rather well for a big guy. He is coming off a season where he missed the last eight games because of a torn labrum. They say he is technically sound and is very quick. I think Smiley will fit in nicely with Miami. Another player signed by Miami was quarterback Josh McCown. The move is somewhat confusing considering there were better options on the market at the time. Why not someone like Billy Volek or Quinn Gray? I guess Parcells and Ireland have a plan and they stuck to it. McCown will be joining his fourth team in his short career. He did throw 11 touchdown passes last season but the Raiders were a pathetic 2-7 when he started.

The signing of wide receiver Earnest Wilford was a nice pickup. The 6’4 receiver from Jacksonville will be a great red zone threat with his height. He is coming off a mediocre season where he caught only 45 passes and scored three touchdowns. He will most likely be the number one receiver going into the season. One player signed that caught my attention was Randy Starks. A four year from player from Tennessee, Starks is 6’3 and weighs in at 316. I knew somewhere down the line Miami would sign a big guy for the defensive tackle position. I have to be honest here; I have no clue who Randy Starks is. I had to look up some information on him just to get familiar with him. He has decent stats to say the least but giving Starks a five year deal worth 21 million, is that smart? I guess we will have to find out come September. I do trust the new regime but I just hope this one doesn’t blow up in there faces.

I have to admit that when I read or watch reporters from the TV or newspapers call the Miami Dolphins free agents winners, I have a good laugh. How can you say that? Do they have a crystal ball? Can they see the future and know what lies ahead for the Miami Dolphins? To me it is all blind faith. The truth of the matter is regardless of who Miami would have brought here through free agency this team is in a rebuilding mode. I don’t need to sit here and wait till September to tell that they are going to finish dead last again. It’s not going to be pretty I promise you that.

Sure I want this team to be a winner but everyone must remember Rome wasn’t built in one day and neither will the Miami Dolphins.

Is Asante Samuel Worth 100 Million?

As free agency starts on Friday the Miami Dolphins have a lot of questions that need to be answered. It has been said that Miami has over 40 million dollars to spend. What should they do with all that money? Do they go out and splurge and spend that type of money on big name players such as Alan Faneca and Asante Samuel or do they spend their money wisely and sign players that would be cheaper options.

Take for instance Asante Samuel. It has been rumored that he is asking for a 10 year deal worth 100 million. Sure he is a great cornerback but if you sign a player to a contract like that does it really help your team? If your willing to break the bank for one guy that is fine but what about the other positions on this team. There are far too many holes on this club that need to be addressed.

I believe the right course of direction would be to get an abundance of young talented players, sprinkled in with one or two older veteran players. Start with someone like Jacob Bell from the Titans. He may be not the sexy choice for the guard spot but he definitely would be a cheaper option then Alan Faneca. Another guy that could help Miami would be Will Demps. For many years now I have always enjoyed watching this guy play. He is a team leader and has always performed well wherever he has played. Those are the type of players you need to bring here.

With many fans coming up with unrealistic ideas and hoping we can sign Asante Samuel and Alan Faneca and then still trade for Chad Johnson or Roy Williams it makes you wonder what are they thinking. Sure those are great ideas to have but they aren’t going to happen anytime soon. Let’s not forget some of that money needs to be saved for that number one pick. I would love for Miami to be aggressive this off-season but spending it wisely is the best way to do it.

As we move along and wrap up my four part series I look at the most glaring problem with this team, the secondary. I do believe since the NFL draft is loaded with young talented cornerbacks that it might be wise to wait till the draft and take one their.

Part Four of Four: Cornerbacks

1. Asante Samuel- New England- 27 Years Old- One of the best cornerbacks in the NFL. He is a great shutdown corner who is a hard worker and keeps on getting better with every passing year. He finished the ’06 season with ten picks and had six this year. The only knock against him might be that he gambles too much. In my personal opinion I rather have a player who is willing to take chances to win games for my team. I love Samuel a lot but he is seeking a deal worth 100 million. I would rather not pay that type of money to one player when this team has so many other needs.

2. Randall Gay- New England- 25 years Old- He has been more consistent in coverage this past year. Could be the physical presence the Phins have been looking for at the cornerback spot. Gay had a career high three interceptions this year. I definitely think he would be a cheaper option then his buddy Samuel. For the right price I would do something.

3. Jacques Reeves- Dallas- 25 Years Old- Reeves started 13 games this season for the Cowboys. He was used in their nickel/dime packages. He only had 1 pick this year but did finish with 60 tackles. Reeves brother in law, Todd Bowles was hired by Miami as their new secondary coach this past off-season. You would think that there is a good chance he might end up in Miami. I did see Reeves play a little and came off wanting more. He could be used in nickel/dime packages but that’s about it.

4. Drayton Florence- San Diego- 27 Years Old- Florence lost his starting job this year to Antonio Cromartie. At 6’0, Florence has great size for a cornerback and is very physical. He is a great tackler and is very good against the run. Even thou he has only ten interceptions over the last four seasons, Florence could be the guy to help turn around this terrible secondary. Since he was a starter for half the season last year I am guessing that Florence will want a lot of cash. I am curious to see if Florence would fit into the Dolphins plans.

Safety

1. Madieu Williams- Cincinnati- 26 Years Old- He missed the last three games of the ’07 season with a thigh contusion injury. He can be very inconsistent at times. Some think he takes plays off every now and then. Williams had two picks and two sacks this past season. He also showed he is a good tackling safety finishing with 74 tackles. Seeing that the safety spot is so weak for Miami I would definitely show some interest in him. He is very young and hungry perhaps for a new start. What better way to make a name for yourself in Miami. The only thing I am not sure about is what type of contract he is looking for.

2. Gibril Wilson- New York Giants- 26 Years Old- As the season went on Wilson became the leader of the Giants secondary. He finished with 92 tackles and four int’s. Wilson is a big time hitter and is very physical. In the ’06 and ’05 seasons he finished with over 100 tackles. It’s hard to imagine that the Giants would let Wilson just go to another team. I’m not buying it myself. On the other hand if the Giants don’t resign him then I am calling him immediately to get him here for an interview.

3. Will Demps- Texans- 28 Years Old- I have always liked Will Demps no matter where he has played. He has had some minor injury issues over the last few seasons but this guy is a player. He would bring Miami that veteran presence they have been missing in the secondary. He is a great run stopper and could help with the youngsters on this team. You also could plug him into nickel/dime situations. He did start eight games last season for the Texans and did finish with 52 tackles and two forced fumbles. In the ’06 season with the Giants, Demps had a great year with over 100 tackles and 2 picks. I honestly believe that he would be a great addition to this team. He reminds me of Brock Marion a little. Not terribly flashy but he gets the job done.

4. Eugene Wilson- New England- 27 Years Old- After two strong seasons in ’03 and ’04 Wilson has been plagued by inconsistent play and injuries. Some people are skeptical that Wilson can ever return to his rookie form when he had four int’s. Having played only 15 games over the last two seasons I would think Wilson would come cheap. A change of scenery would do him some good. He intrigues me but I’m not sure about his health. I really don’t want to give my new starting safety a big contract then by week four have him on the sidelines in street clothes. If all other options fail I probe bring him in.

Free Agent Wish List:

1. Calvin Pace- LB- He said on the radio the other day that he wants to play for Miami. What a dream come true that would be for me and all Dolphin fans.

2. Jacob Bell- Guard – Everywhere I read is that the Titans are going to let Bell walk. I am a little surprised considering he is still young (27) and looks like he is going to turn out to be a great guard for many years to come. It also seems that Miami is not interested in resigning Rex Hadnot. That’s ok with me because I think Bell is a huge upgrade over Hadnot.

3. Ben Troupe- TE- I know he hasn’t had a great NFL career up to this point but this guy is a player. Call it a gut feeling or something but I do believe he could help out the Phins.

4. Gibril Wilson-Safety- Like I said earlier I would love the Phins to get him on their roster. I just think the Giants aren’t that dumb enough to let him walk.

5. Will Demps-Safety- I love Demps and what he brings to the table. Sure he might be a little older then some of other players, but he is a leader when he is on the field. I love the way he plays the game.

Farewell Zach

It was twelve years ago and Jimmy Johnson was the Head Coach of the Miami Dolphins. Earlier in the spring that year Miami had signed linebacker Jack Del Rio of the Vikings. That’s right, the same Del Rio that is now the Head Coach of Jacksonville. Figuring that Miami needed some depth at the linebacker position, Johnson selected a player from Texas Tech in the 5th round. That player turned out to be Zach Thomas. I must admit when I picked up an NFL magazine in August all it said about Thomas was that he was short and would make a pretty decent special team’s player. Well as fate would have it Del Rio was released two weeks before the season and this unknown kid from Texas Tech was named the starting middle linebacker on opening day. At 5’11 Thomas wasn’t the most intimating player out there but he had a passion for the game and great instincts on the field.

They said Thomas was too small and slow to play the middle linebacker position. Some were even bold enough to say he would be lucky to last more then three years in the league. Well I guess they were wrong. He lasted 12 years to be exact. If you look at his career stats they will simply blow you away. Thomas currently has more tackles then any linebacker who is in the Hall Of Fame. He has accumulated over 1,800 tackles. Another stat that has never showed up in a box score was his leadership. He was a true general on the field. You knew no matter what Zach was going to give you 100 % on every down.

As I write this piece about Zach I am starting to realize how much I will miss him. Twelve years ago I took a leap of faith and bought a Zach Thomas jersey not knowing what the future would bring. Twelve years later I am glad I did purchase that jersey. As I wrote this I have heard rumors that Thomas may sign with the Patriots or the Saints or maybe even the Bills. No matter where he ends up, Zach Thomas will always be a Miami Dolphin. I think I speak for all the Dolphin fans out there when I say thank you very much. It was a privilege watching you play every Sunday.

Well as promised this week we start looking at defensive players. I think two big things that the Dolphins must address before the ’08 season is having a better rush defense and better play from the linebacker spot. Those two things need to be addressed thru either free agency or the draft in order for this team to be completive.

Part three of four: Defensive Tackle

1. Corey Williams- Green Bay- 27 years old – 6’4  313- Coming off one of his best seasons so far. He had seven sacks to go along with 32 tackles and three forced fumbles. Williams is a disruptive force in the middle and that could help one of the worst rush defenses in the league. Being so young and talented it’s very surprising to see that the Packers haven’t tagged him yet. I would love to see Corey Williams in a Miami Dolphins uniform but I would be shocked if Green Bay doesn’t get a deal done with him.

2. Isaac Sopoaga- San Francisco- 27 years old – 6’2 325 – He isn’t a big name that will blow you away but he is someone I think the Phins will be interested in. He is a pure run stopper, nothing more. He could become a steal for the Phins and I think he would relish the chance to start in a 3-4 system that is best suited for his talents. I do think with more defenses playing the 3-4, Sopoaga will be a wanted man this off-season. With that said I think he is worth bringing here and signing.

Defensive End

1. Chris Clemons- Oakland- 26 years old – 6’3 240 – Clemons is basically used on passing downs. He was a linebacker two years ago but now has excelled in playing the end position. He had a career high eight sacks this past year. I am intrigued by Clemons and would bring him in for an interview. I don’t think I would pay him that much but I would listen to what he has to say.

2. Travis LaBoy- Tennessee- 26 years old – 6’3 260 – LaBoy is another player you could call a pass rush specialist. He has finished with six sacks two years in a row. Some think he hasn’t reached his full potential yet. Sounds like a pretty good player but I don't really think I would break the bank for a pass rush specialist. Maybe if we could give him a contract with incentives I would feel much better about it.

3. Antwan Odom- Tennessee – 26 years old – 6’5 274 – This might be one of the most prized ends in the free agent market. At 6’5 Odom has the perfect size to play in the 3-4 system. He has great speed around the corner and is very motivated. The Tennessee Titan had a career high eight sacks this past year. Some people believe he is coming into his own. This is a special player. I love all the intangibles this kid brings to the table. I have no ideal where Odom might end up but I sure hope he finds his way to Miami.

Linebacker

1. Lance Briggs- Chicago- 27 years old – 6’1 240 – Considered of the best linebackers in today’s game. Might be more suited for the 4-3 and has said many times he would never play in a 3-4 defense. Has made the pro bowl the last three seasons. He finished with over 100 tackles for the fourth year in a row. Even thou he has said he would not play in a 3-4 defense I still think a lot of money could change his mind. He could be great here in opinion.

2. Calvin Pace- Arizona- 27 years old – 6’4 270 – Was converted from the defensive end spot to the linebacker spot. He finished with 98 tackles, six sacks and 1 interception, all career highs for him. He has flourished since moving to the outside linebacker spot. He has a great motor and is a hard worker. His skills seem to get better with every passing year. I would love to this kid to end up in Miami but after the season he just had he is going to want a lot of money. I’m sure he is worth it but I rather spread our money around to three to four players.

3. Bobby Carpenter – Dallas – 26 years old – 6’2 248 – There was rumor going around that Carpenter might be available thru a trade. He was drafted when both Parcells and Ireland were in Dallas. So far Carpenter has been a disappointment in the league. He was in Wade Phillips doghouse most of the year. He has the size to play in the 3-4, but the real question remains, does he have the talent? I’m not sold on Carpenter but I would explore it. I would offer a 6th rounder for him. I would offer a 5th rounder but that pick was sent last year in exchange for Trent Green.

4. Landon Johnson- Cincinnati – 26 years old – 6’2 232- Johnson is a tackling machine to say the least. He has averaged over 110 tackles the last two seasons. He can play both the 4-3 and 3-4 and has great instincts. He is also a great team leader on the field. Some people have called him mediocre or just your average linebacker at best. My only probe with that is how you can call a guy who averages over 110 tackles two seasons in a row just average. Isn’t that what Zach Thomas used to do for this ball club. Say what you will I like him and think he would be a cheaper option then Briggs or Pace.

5. Kawika Mitchell- NY Giants- 28 years old – 6’1 253 – The Super Bowl winner isn’t going anywhere in my opinion. I like the fact that he is a free agent and free to do as he wishes but I seriously doubt the Giants are going to let him just walk free. Last season Mitchell came over from Kansas City and signed a one year deal. This year Mitchell is going to reap the benefits from having a solid year. Mitchell had 76 tackles this past year to go with three sacks. Another added perk with Mitchell is that he hasn’t missed a game in three seasons. I think he is a great player but I think the Giants and him make a great pair. I doubt they let him walk.

Next week I wrap up my four part series and focus on the most glaring probe with this team, the secondary.

Parcells Cleaning House in Miami

This past Monday General Manager Jeff Ireland made his 1st big decision. He along with Head Coach Tony Sparano made the decision to release nine players. The two biggest names out of the bunch were Trent Green and Marty Booker. Last year Miami traded for Green hoping he could bring some energy and put some life into a mediocre offense. Thru four games Green was making progress and you could see the offense finally jelling together. In week five at Houston, Green tried to make a block for Ted Ginn on a botched reverse. It would end up being the final play of the year for Green. After that play it was revealed that Green suffered another concussion. At this point there is no reason to bring him back especially with all the health concerns surrounding him.

Also released was wide receiver Marty Booker. After coming over in a trade from Chicago a few years ago Miami had high hopes for Booker. None of those hopes were ever rewarded. At best Booker was a mediocre receiver. He dropped a lot of passes and seemed to be slowing down.

Two other players that were released on Monday were Keith Traylor and LJ Shelton. Miami signed Shelton two years ago to play left tackle. He never produced from the day he got here. Because of his poor play, Shelton was shifted all over the line from guard back to tackle then back to guard.

In regards to Traylor he might have been better off retiring like he said he was going to do at the end of the ’06 season. With many injuries to the defensive line, Traylor had to play much more then expected. He started to wear down towards the end of the year and had a lot of nagging injuries along the way. In the next to final game of the year Traylor got into an altercation on the plane ride home from the New England game. With one game left to be played in the season, Traylor was kicked off the team by then Head Coach Cam Cameron. With all the bad memories of that episode still fresh in everyone’s mind I think it’s safe to say Traylor’s days in Miami are over.

Along with those four, five others were released on Monday.. All in all the Dolphins are now approximately 31 million under the cap. With only two more weeks till free agency starts, im sure the Dolphins are going to try and become major players. This week I continue to look at possible free agents targets for the Dolphins. I take a closer look at the Offensive Line free agents that will be available.

Part two of four: Offensive Tackle

1. Flozell Adams – Dallas – 32 years old –  6’7 342 - Adams is one of the best left tackles in the game. He is a ten year vet and has made the Pro Bowl four times. He has some minor knee issues the last few seasons. He missed ten games in 2004 but for the most part he is very reliable. You half to wonder if Sparano will have any influence of him leaving Dallas and joining up with the Dolphins. I’m not sure I would give a four year contract to a 32 year old left tackle. I would try and look for someone younger but heck, if he wants to come here and play im all for it.

2. Stacy Andrews – Cincinnati – 27 years old – 6’7 348 - this young lineman could be just what the Phins are looking for. He is young, can play multiple positions and is big as heck. He did start 12 games this year when Willie Anderson was out. He can play both tackle and guard position. He played 11 games at right tackle and 3 games at guard this past year. He played well throughout the year and might be one of those hidden gems. If you brought in a player like this then Vernon Carey could stay at Left Tackle. I think Carey played great this year at that position. I would love to see this guy come and met with the Phins brass. It never hurts to talk and see what one wants.

3. Travelle Wharton – Carolina – 26 years old – 6’4 312 -A four year vet who at times has not performed as great as some say he should. Some say he might be best suited for the guard position. He played for OL Coach Mike Maser who now works for the Phins in the same capacity. Could come cheap but is still young and might draw some interest.

4. Jordan Gross – Carolina - 28 years old – 6’4 300 - Most likely Gross will either resign with the Panthers or be tagged by them. He is more suited for the right tackle spot but could play left if he had to. He is also touted as one of the best run blockers in the league. Like I said before, he isn’t going anywhere.

5. Max Starks – Pittsburgh – 25 years old – 6’8 337 - Max is a four year man out of Florida. Still young and is considered to be a hard worker. Starks was a starter for the 2005 Super Bowl team and started also in 2006. Played left tackle at the end of the year and played well there. Had some knee issues towards the end of the year but nothing to be considered serious. Always help to have a guy on the club who knows how to win. With a guy like this who knows what type of money he might be looking for. If the price is low enough I take a flyer on him.

Offensive Guard

1. Maurice Williams – Jacksonville – 29 years old – 6’5 300 – Williams can play either tackle or guard position. He started the last two months at the guard position and handled himself pretty well. He is not going to blow you away but he gets the job done. He has spent his entire seven year career with the Jags. This is someone you could look at but I would only use him for depth at either the tackle or guard position.

2. Alan Faneca – Pittsburgh – 31 years old – 6’5  307 – Probe the best guard free agent prospect out there. Has played in five pro bowls and is a hard worker. The only negative about him might be his age. At 31 some players start to slow down and towards the end of last year Faneca started to. Never the less I would still take him in a heartbeat. I do believe this team needs a veteran presence along the line. I would love to have him in a Dolphin uniform but to be  realistic about it  he probe goes elsewhere where he could win right away.

3. Jacob Bell – Tennessee – 27 years old – 6’4  295 – Bell is becoming on the elite guards in the league. He doesn’t take a play off and has proven he has what it takes to become a star in this league. He did miss some time ’05 but has started the last 31 games in a row for the Titans. Bell is turning out to be a good young guard and that is something the Phins need. I say bring him to town and make sure he doesn’t get back on a plane to Tennessee.

4. Ryan Lilja – Indianapolis – 26 years old – 6’2  290 – Ryan has come into his own over the last two seasons. Has turned into a good run blocker and had made great progress on his pass blocking skills as well. I like this guy a lot but I can’t see Indy letting one of Peyton’s blocker just leave town.

5. Milford Brown – St.Louis – 27 years old – 6’5  330 – Brown is a journeyman. He just finished playing for his third team. He was rushed into duty this year because of all the injuries to the Rams offensive line. He performed better then expected. He is a good run blocker and could be a cheap option at either guard position. He definitely could add depth to a position that was lacking last year. I know it is a reach but you never know.

Well that concludes this week’s look at the Offensive Line. Next week we will finally start talking defense

Important Off-season Ahead for Tuna and Company

With Free Agency only a few weeks away Jeff Ireland and Bill Parcells have their work cut out for them. Both Ireland and Parcells will have some tough decisions to make. There isn’t much talent on the current roster. Bringing in new players might be hard. How can you honestly be expected to find players who want to play for a 1-15 team? As we speak, Ireland and Parcells are preparing there list of free agent targets. Well over the last week I have compiled a list of free agent targets as well. In the upcoming weeks you will be able to see for yourself. I will share my thoughts and insight on each player. Well let’s get started and see how it all shakes out.

Part 1 of 4: Quarterbacks:

1. Quinn Gray - Jacksonville- 28 yrs old - Gray is an interesting player. Could he become the next David Garrard or Derek Anderson? No one will ever know until he is given a chance. Just like every great QB, at some point they were rookies or a backup. Well maybe it’s time someone gives Gray his chance. At 6’3 he certainly has the size to be a good QB.He played 8 games this season and started 4 of them. In those 8 games he finished with 10 td passes and a passer rating of 85.He also had two games where he threw for over 300 yards. He is a very mobile QB and shows a lot of confidence in himself and his teammates. I personally wouldn’t mind seeing Gray brought in here to be the starting QB.

2. Chris Simms - Tampa Bay – 27 yrs old – If I remember correctly Parcells once said that Phil Simms was his favorite QB. Well maybe dear ole dad can talk to Tuna about his son Chris. You know throw in a little scouting report on him and how he could help the Dolphins QB situation. It wouldn’t hurt to make a call and see if the Bucs were willing to deal Chris. Perhaps a low mid draft pick would do the trick Last year Chris signed a two year extension and will receive a one million roster bonus on March 1st. Simms missed all of  ’07 after recovering from an emergency splenectomy performed on him in ’06. He had his best season in ’05 when he led the Bucs to the playoffs. He started 10 games that year and finished with 10 td passes. You half to start wondering if Simms will ever been given a chance to start for the Bucs. Jeff Garcia is still the starter their and is not going anywhere. There is also a rumor floating around that the Bucs are trying to talk Jake Plummer out of retirement. So if that’s true it would seem that Simms is far down on the depth chart for the Bucs. I wouldn’t mind seeing Chris Simms here. I probe would offer Tampa a 4th round pick. That seems about fair.

3. Billy Volek - San Diego - 31 yrs old - I know what you’re saying…Why is Billy Volek on the list. Well for starters he would be a great mentor to a young Qb like John Beck and most likely he would come cheap. If anyone remembers not long ago Volek was a starter for the Tennessee Titans. He started 8 games in 2004 for them. He finished with 18 td passes that year and threw for over 2,000 yards. Let’s also not forget what he did this past January in Indy to the Colts. He led them to the winning drive and sneaked it over from the one yard line. He has always showed a lot of veteran poise that this team could definitely use. I’m all for bringing him here. It never hurts to have a great presence like Volek around to mold or tutor a young QB.

Wide Receiver:

1. Chad Johnson – Cincinnati- 30 – Well so far im sure you have heard Chad Johnson telling anyone who will listen how bad he wants to play for the Dolphins. He even was quoted as saying that Parcells should just call him. I’m all for this. This guy is a playmaker. It has been years since this team has had one. Look no further then his stats and that is all you need to know about the guy. Five straight season over 1200 yards and let’s not forget that he has caught over 90 balls in four of the last five seasons. It‘s a no brainier for me. I think he is worth a 2nd round pick. Go get him Tuna!

2. Bernard Berrian – Chicago – 27 yrs old – One of the fastest receivers in the league. Had career highs in both catches (71) and receiving yards (951) in ’07. Some think he might be just coming into his own. Some insiders said his stats suffered because of the QB carousel going on in Chicago. If there was to be one negative about Berrian it would be that he drops some passes he should catch but all in all he is good player and only going to get better. Rumor has it that the Bears will use there franchise tag on Berrian. I think Berrian could help this team. The Dolphins already have a burner in Ted Ginn. Could you imagine having two of the fastest wide receivers in the league on either side? Now that would be exciting.

3. Bryant Johnson – Arizona – 26 yrs old – Johnson is a big physical receiver. He has the reputation of running great routes and has great hands too. The concern you get when talking about Johnson is potential. A former 1st round pick Johnson never lived up to that pick. With the Cardinals already having Fitzgerald and Boldin , Johnson didn’t see to much playing time. He started 8 games in ’07 only cause of injuries to Boldin and Fitzgerald. His best year came in 2006 when he caught 40 balls for 740 yards to go with 4 td’s. Those are good numbers but you expect more from a former 1st round pick. I think Johnson is going to price himself to high for most suitors but if the price was reasonable I take a flyer on him.

4. Roy Williams – Detroit – 26 yrs old – Word is that Roy Williams wants out of Detroit. Could Miami be interested in him? Like I said earlier with Johnson, when the last time was this team had a real go to guy. It has been years and when someone like Roy Williams name might be thrown around in trade talks you half to throw your hat in there. Most likely Williams is going to stay with the Lions but a guy that has his potential and 28 career td’s in only four years you definitely got to look into.

5. DJ Hackett – Seattle – 26 yrs old – Hackett will probe get a lot of interest from plenty of teams. He has the potential to be a # 1 WR in this league. Filled with the talent of having great speed to go along with great hands, the sky is the limit for this one. The only obstacle for Hackett might be that he gets injured to often. After coming back from injuries Hackett had two consecutive games over 100 yards receiving. He also had three games in row with a touchdown. In this years 1st round playoff game vs. Washington, Hackett finished with 6 catches for 101 yards and a touchdown. Rumors have spread that Seattle likes him so much they may tag him. I find that hard to believe since Marcus Trufant is a free agent himself. I think Hackett has the potential to be a great receiver. He is young, fast and can only get better from here on out. The question remains thou, how much does he want? I’m guessing he will out price himself and land somewhere else.

6. Keary Colbert – Carolina– 25 yrs old – This once promising wide out from USC has been a disappointment. He finished the season on the injured reserve and has been a non factor the last two seasons. The USC product finished his rookie season in great fashion. He caught 47 balls for 754 yards to go with 5 td’s. After that he seemed to lose his focus. I think I would take a chance on Colbert. I would make him the # 3 or 4 receiver. His speed could also help on special teams. He would come cheap and if he ever ends up playing like he did in his rookie year he could become a huge steal.

Tight End:

1. Eric Johnson – New Orleans – 28 yrs old – Not that fast but a decent blocker at best. Could bring a positive veteran presence in the locker room that the Dolphins have been lacking lately. Had his best year in ’04 when he caught 82 passes for 825 yards. He would be a big improvement over David Martin who was terrible. I would sign him for decent money for a year or two.

2. Ben Troupe – Tennessee – 25 yrs old – Had a great year with 55 catches in ’05. Another player with tons of upside to him. Hasn’t played up to his potential as of late. Was lost in the tight end rotation in Tennessee this past season. A former Florida Gator. He would certainly be very cheap and I say he would definitely be an upgrade over Martin.

Well that’s it for part one; I will see you next week with my lists of offensive tackles and guards.

Ireland Looks To Trade Top Pick

It has only been two weeks since Jeff Ireland was appointed General Manager of the Miami Dolphins. You could excuse the man if he hasn’t taken time to introduce himself either. You see before you probe the busiest GM in the league. Yesterday, Ireland came out in public and said that the number one pick in this year’s NFL draft is quote “open for business.” Well Rome wasn’t built in one day and Ireland knows that. He also realizes that it’s going to take a lot more then the overall number one pick in this year’s draft to make this team any better.

It would be much easier to say let’s draft Darren McFadden but why would you do that when you have Ronnie Brown. If I remember correctly Brown was having a pro bowl season before he was knocked out for the season. So why draft another running back? This years draft has a few players who could be easily considered the number one overall pick. From the likes of Chris Long of Virginia to Jake Long of Michigan or Glenn Dorsey of LSU  these players including McFadden all have what it takes to be considered for that top spot. The problem ahead that Ireland faces now, does anyone want to break the bank to move up into the one spot.

Last year’s number one overall pick, JaMarcus Russell received a guaranteed contract of 31 million dollars. The contract itself was worth 60 million over six years. Let’s also not forget that Russell held out for six weeks. Throw all those facts in there and what you have is your franchise player sitting on the sidelines for half the season in street clothes. That is the problem that lies ahead for Ireland. The question should really be…is anyone one that dumb enough to want to move up and trade for the number one pick? I do believe there are a few teams that might be interested but really only one comes to mind and that would be the Dallas Cowboys.

Why you ask? Well it’s very simple. Number one they do have two 1st round draft picks (22 and 28) respectively. The other reason is that Jerry Jones is on the other side of that phone and he is always looking to make a splash. Throw in the fact that he is a graduate of Arkansas and that he has been rumored to be head over heels for McFadden. If Jones is calling im listening to what he has to say. Let him deal with the headaches. My thoughts are this; if Dallas offers both 1st rounders and possibly their 3rd round pick I do it. Im also telling Jones give me your 2nd  round pick in ’09 and throw in Marcus Spears. I’m sure some of you are saying why not ask for there 2nd  round pick this year. Well I thought about that but let’s not be greedy. Remember he is helping us and were helping him out.

If Dallas wants to trade up for the number one overall spot then let them. No worries for me. Now I have picks 22, 28 and 31. That basically means I have three picks out of the next nine selections. That’s not too bad. I definitely made this look easy. I’m sure it won’t be for Ireland thou. When draft day finally arrives for Ireland and company I still expect to see the Phins in the same position they are today…with the number one overall pick.

Sparano Named Head Coach

The Miami Dolphins have there man. In reality they should thank the New York Giants. If it wasn’t for the Giants beating the Cowboys this past weekend, Dolphin fans may still be waiting until February. Well maybe something finally went right for them this season after all. It just toke until the season ended. Tony Sparano was named head coach today at Dolphin headquarters. Truth be told it’s probe the worst kept secret going around the NFL that Sparano was going to get the HC position in Miami.

After nine seasons in the league Sparano has his work cut out for him. Most of the players on defense are old and not very productive. The offense has even more holes to be filled. Major questions marks revolve around a mediocre offensive line to not having a true number one wideout. The bigger problem might not be having a franchise Quarterback yet. Even thou John Beck was a 2nd round pick last year and played sparely he did little to impress when he was in there. The new regime might want to go in another direction. Possibly thru free agency or maybe they might want to draft a Quarterback of there own preference.

No doubts about it, there are going to be a lot of questions that half to be answered this upcoming offseason. What player’s stay or goes? Do you trade your best player Jason Taylor for a possible 2nd round pick? Which free agents do you bring here? All these and more must be answered soon. I must admit I don’t know much about Tony Sparano but i am much happier knowing that Cam Cameron is not coming back for another season. I'm sure I speak for a lot of Dolphin fans when I say I am not sure I could stomach another season from him.

Tuna Takes Over In Miami

As soon as Bill Parcells was named Vice President of operations for the Miami Dolphins, Randy Mueller and Cam Cameron might as well started packing there bags. Bringing in a guy like Bill Parcells means a lot of change is going to take place. 1st it was Mueller to get the pink slip then three days later Cameron followed. When it comes down to it neither one should have been surprised.

Judging by all the boos he received on draft day after taking Ted Ginn over fan favorite Brady Quinn, Cameron had to know the honeymoon was over. A few days after Cameron was let go Jay Feely would confirm reports that there was an altercation on the airplane that led to the dismal of defensive tackle Robert Traylor. The dismissal didn’t go over well with some of the veteran players. Also confirmed in reports was that Joey Porter went on a tirade and ripped into Cameron. After that, it was all but over for Cameron.

Terrible leadership like that will get you canned and well it did eventually for him. Maybe a guy like Bill Parcells can get this team back into there winning ways. Once a proud organization times have been harsh for this team. For starters they haven’t made the playoffs in the last six years. Attendance is at a new all time low and it seems that not many big time free agents want to come here. It was reported last year that both Dante Stallworth and Ken Hamlin showed some interest into signing with the phins but both decided against it. Smart decisions on there side.

A major job of newly appointed GM, Jeff Ireland is going to be how can he get big name free agents to come here and play for a team that just finished the season 1-15.It won’t be easy but with the help of Parcells around there might be many players from his years in Dallas that may want to come here. Another added bonus would be the that Tony Sparano offensive line coach in Dallas is rumored to be groomed as the new head coach as soon as  Dallas is eliminated from the playoffs.

The key to the off-season for tuna and his mates will be how to get new players in here and who stays or goes from the current roster. Trading a guy like Jason Taylor for an 2nd round pick should be explored. This team is very old and should explore all avenues into becoming a younger team as soon as possible. The two biggest things that lay ahead for this team will be to find there franchise QB and what will they do with there # 1 overall pick. Before anything else two those questions needs to be addressed immediately.
